Pixelate image

Pixelate faces, names or any part of an image with a mosaic effect: drag a box over each area, or pixelate the whole picture for a retro pixel-art look. Pick the block size, then download. Free, no watermark, and your image never leaves your browser.

No image yet. You can also drop a file or paste a screenshot (Ctrl+V) here.

Effect

Drag on the image to add a box. Changing mode or strength updates the last box.

How big should the pixels be?

To hide something, each block should be much larger than the details you want gone: for a face, around a tenth of the face width or bigger; for text, larger than the letters themselves, otherwise words can still be guessed from their shapes. For truly secret text (passwords, keys, card numbers) a solid black box is safer than any mosaic. For a pixel-art look on the whole image, a block of 1 to 2% of the width works well. Strength sets the block size as a share of the image's shorter side.

How it works

Your browser decodes the image (applying the phone's EXIF rotation) and redraws it on a canvas at full resolution. Blur uses a Gaussian blur on each box; where the browser has no canvas blur (older Safari), it falls back to a smooth downscale-and-upscale blur. Pixelate averages each block of pixels into one color. Black box paints solid black. Boxes are stored in image pixels, so the preview size doesn't matter. Nothing is uploaded, so it works for private photos and screenshots, and even offline once the page has loaded. EXIF metadata (camera, GPS location) is removed from the saved file.

Need to cut it down or turn it too? Use crop image, resize image or rotate image.

Screenshots without the private parts

Blurring the same cookie banner, chat widget or user name out of website screenshots every time? The Shotmint API can hide elements before it captures, so they never end up in the image. Pass CSS selectors in hide_selectors:

curl "https://shotmint.creasework.com/v1/screenshot?url=https://example.com&hide_selectors=.user-name,%23intercom-container&block_ads=true" -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_KEY" -o clean.png

Each screenshot is 1 credit. €5 buys 2,000 with no subscription, and credits never expire.

FAQ

Is my image uploaded? No. Everything runs in JavaScript on this page.

Can a blur be undone? Not from the saved file's hidden data: it holds only the edited pixels. But a weak blur or small pixels over text can sometimes be read by eye or reconstructed, so for passwords, keys and numbers use the black box, or raise the strength until the text is a smooth smear.

Can I blur the background and keep the subject sharp? Not yet: boxes blur what is inside them. To soften most of a photo, add several boxes around the subject.

Does it work on phones? Yes. Drag with your finger to draw a box. Mode and strength changes update the last box you drew; earlier boxes keep theirs, so you can mix blur and black boxes.

Is there a limit? No watermark and no count limit. Images up to 16,384 pixels per side. Animated GIF and WebP files are edited as their first frame.
